A Good Time to Buy a High-End Home

Some of the best housing deals are on high-end homes, many over $1 million. Some of them need TLC or they aren’t in the most-coveted locations. But there are plenty of desirable properties and lots of sellers who are getting impatient.

Buyers with cash have the best opportunities. Buyers who need a mortgage should move especially quickly. With the Federal Reserve ending its purchases of mortgage securities this month, the mortgage market is likely to rise from its current low level. Even if prices fall further, the rising cost of borrowing could eliminate any savings.

As Kenneth Rosen, chairman of the Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics at the University of California, says, this is a “very good time to be a buyer at the high end.”

AHS plant sale will be held on Good Friday

The Aiken High School FFA chapter has a sale to brighten shoppers’ gardens for spring.

The AHS FFA Spring Plant Sale will take place from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday at the Aiken High greenhouses located behind the football field. The sale will include ferns, petunias, geraniums, Gerbera daisies, begonias, vegetables and more, according to horticulture teacher Meghan Wood.

“We’ve been doing plant sales since the beginning of time, but the additions to the greenhouses were about 10 years ago, and that’s probably when we got really serious about the sales,” Wood said. “The sale is on Good Friday; we’re out of school that day, and Good Friday is kind of a planting marker used by the Farmers’ Almanac, which was my thinking for using that date.”

All plants at the sale are grown from seed or from plugs by AHS students, who have cared for them daily since planting. The students will also make custom planter arrangements for shoppers at the sale, Wood said.

The FFA chapter hopes to raise about $3,000 from the event. Prices will range from $5 to $20 on most plants.

“Obviously we do the sale to raise money for our activities throughout the year. But it’s also to raise community awareness of what we do. We do get a lot of customers, the sale is very popular, and it helps the students’ interpersonal skills, talking about the plants with the public,” Wood said.

The sale will go on rain or shine, and the students will be on hand to help shoppers with their selections.
