Program fetes horse heroes
The yearlong Celebrate Aiken! campaign continues next Sunday with Aiken’s Horse Heroes.
The presentation will pay tribute to 10 of the 39 national champions that have been enshrined in the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum. It will be held at Rye Patch from 2 to 4 p.m. The program is open to the public.
The Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum will also be open.
“Dogwood Stable wanted to lend its support, and with the first quarter of Celebrate Aiken! being history, horses and health and high society, it seemed perfect to highlight the horses in the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum,” said Mary Jane Howell, Aiken’s Horse Heroes co-chair.
Aiken’s Horse Heroes will give people a look at the careers of the 10 equine athletes who were conditioned at the Aiken Training Track.
The presentation will provide an in-depth look at the horses and their connections through video footage, photographs and guest speakers who were either directly involved with the horse or someone who was associated with one of the featured champions.
Those attending the presentation will be able to watch footage of the selected horses that, in some cases, has been seldom seen, said Janet Harkins, Aiken’s Horse Heroes co-chair. A tent will be set up at Rye Patch for the presentation.
There will be a question-and-answer forum, and a reception will follow the event inside Rye Patch. Full Story……

Thoroughbred museum to host artist’s showcase
The artwork of nationally renowned painter and Aiken resident Lynn Carlisle will be showcased at the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum from Thursday through Nov. 22.
An opening reception for the artist will be held Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m., and is being sponsored by Horse and Farm Insurance, Betsy Minton LLC and Robyn Reilly and Cissie Sullivan of Meybohm Realtors. The public is invited to attend.
The artist, who delights in visible realities, has been able to capture the reflection of the living spirit through her artwork.
Carlisle began honing her skills at an early age, with her formal art instruction beginning when she was 9 years old at the Chicago Art Institute. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Miami University of Ohio. She also had the opportunity to study with artists James Crow and Sam Savitt.
The exhibit will showcase her work in oil and watercolors. Carlisle’s work has been displayed nationwide in the Simpson Gallagher Gallery in Cody, Wyo., the Kentucky Horse Park Museum in Lexington, Ky., the Museum of Hounds and Hunting in Morven Park, Va., and the Aiken Center for the Arts.
Her pieces establish a unity of form and mood. Paintings of hounds playing in the water, a gambolling paint foal and Dinky, a miniature donkey who lives on Coker Springs Road, are featured in the display. Dogwood Stable’s Classic winner Summer Squall is among those featured in the series of watercolors.

Viewers of the exhibit will find that the images of Southworth’s photography will be observed with equal interest. She has been able to express the supreme power of her subjects through her artwork.
The award-winning photographer has had her photos published in The Blood-Horse, Thoroughbred Record, Associated Press, Sky Magazine, New York Times and Washington Post. A resident of Aiken, Southworth graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in photography from Syracuse University and has a Master of Fine Arts in photography from the University of South Carolina.
“The photographs are absolutely fantastic,” said Lisa Hall, City of Aiken Parks, Recreation and Tourism department and Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum programs supervisor. “The photographs are all new, and they’re amazing. Anyone who knows her work as the chief photographer at the Aiken Standard will appreciate this exhibit. The last time she had an exhibit at the Hall of Fame was 2003. We’re excited to have her back.”
